Los Lunas, NM Weekend….

We had a most excellent time a few weeks ago in New Mexico. We went down a few days early to help my family out for a few days, and stayed over the weekend to show dogs. Was a great little mini “vacation” if you ask me!!

Anyway, it was also the “maiden voyage” and first road trip for the box truck. It was fun. I think its good to do a trip or two with something like this you are working on so you figure out what you need and what works and what does not. One of the first things we realized was that we needed a broom!! And then decided we might as well see if we could find a small shopvac that could mount on the wall as well (and we did, on clearance at wal-mart – which was an awesome find!!) So broom and wall mounted shopvac aside, the truck is pretty fabulous! Working out of it for a week with the dogs made life much easier than hauling crates in and out and working out of the minivan ever was!! There are some organizational things we need to figure out, but those will come with time of course and getting things “finished” as we go along. But for now, I’m quick pleased with how things are going with it.

Anyway, back to the show – we had 3 Cardigans and 2 Pointers entered over the weekend.

Puzzle needed 3 points to finish going into the weekend. She was WB/BOB the first two days for two of those points. She was also Best of Breed Puppy on Thursday and got a puppy Group 4th (which makes her 3 for 3 in puppy group placements in her puppy career…) Lorne ended up WB/BOB the last two days for 2 more points on her total.

In Cardigans, Widget was 2nd in her class 3 out of 4 days, and won her class on Saturday. Nola (who I show for and is owned by Penni Adrian of Elyan Cardigans – http://www.elyancardigans.com) placed in the Open class every day she was entered, and was 2nd/RWB to the 5 point major on Sunday (SO CLOSE!! She only needs a major to finish!!)….Nash (who I show for and is owned by Jeri Lamy of Allegro Cardigans – http://www.allegrocardigans.com) was Select on Thursday, BOB/GROUP FIRST on Friday, BOB/Group Fourth on Saturday, and BOB/Cut in Group on Sunday. Not a bad weekend with the Nashville!!

All in all, not a bad weekend. Was sad and disappointed to have not finished Puzzle, but oh well, such is dog shows and the 14-point curse wanted to remind me that things dont always go as planned!!

We had photos done of some of the dogs while we were down there…will post them here in a bit….but for now, here is Puzzle showing in the Group on Thursday…

One Test At A Time…

On Saturday, we took Puzzle, Domino, and Widget to get their eyes checked (CERF’d) as part of their health testing…happy to say all three are “Normal” 🙂 One down, bunch more to go. Many have a minimum age, so aren’t going to happen immediately, but will be done in the next year as the dogs come of age.

One at a time…

We spent the weekend in Denver at the Arapahoe Kennel Club shows…had Lorne and Puzzle entered, and Widget as well….

Lorne decided she really wanted to be a show dog this weekend, and added another point to her total on Saturday. Puzzle said “HEY! We need to share!” and got the point on Sunday.

Widget is becoming quite the little showgirl herself, and the judge gave her WB/BOW/BOS on Sunday for her 7th point. I think its time we start seriously looking for majors for this one!!

So, it seems, that one point at a time, we are getting closer and closer to those Championship titles….

Its the little things…

We recently upgraded from a van for the dogs to a small box truck for the dogs….it just got to the point that we were having to decide where and who and how to go places based on who had to stay home and watch the dogs at home, or how we were going to travel somewhere with all the dogs plus all our own stuff for the trip. So we “upgraded”….we actually went with an older vehicle, and less “options” (like power windows…) but vastly more room!!

Its a work in progress, and like most projects, as soon as we get it finished, I’m sure we will move on to a different vehicle…but that is another subject 😉

So we’ve been slowly plucking away at getting everything in the truck the way we want it. We have some major projects to do – like new AC for the cab, a rooftop AC unit for the box (with heat option for the winter), need to install a tow hitch and get the cargo rack for it to carry the generator on, need to add a few more crates, have plans to add a fold-away bed so we can rest if needed on the road or wherever…things like that 🙂

I’ve decided, over the course of working on this truck, and especially this past week as we’ve finished up some of the larger projects and some of the detail projects as well…that really, with something like this – its all in the details.

Like this:

We were driving somewhere someplace one day (like how vague and non-remembered the whole situation is now?!) and we passed the remnants of a vehicle that had burnt down on the side of the road. All I really remember is I looked at B and said “We need a fire extinguisher in the box truck” and he said “Ok”…the next day he came home with one, and it was recently hung in its new home on the cab side of the cabinet….easy access in case of emergency, and the first place I’m going anyway is the back to get dogs out in case of fire (we discussed putting it in the cab on the back wall, but I worried that should it somehow come loose from its bracket, it would hit me or the passenger in the head…)

Or little things that make life easier like this:

When I traveled with Monica earlier this year, this little gem was imparted into my memory…and after having to chase down the grooming arms and umbrellas that had fallen behind crates one day, I remembered it. A quick trip to home depot (and some McGyvering, because they only had rounded caps, so I just used duct tape on the bottom to “seal” them, and then put another strip around the top since the cut edge was slightly sharp and burred and I didnt want it catching on things or ruining things) and the problem was (partially) solved! I plan to add two more back there, but those pipes arent cheap (considering that they are just 2 ft lengths of pipe) and I have shows to enter and other things to do at the moment…but for now, it solves the issue FABULOUSLY!! I love them already 🙂

So, anyway, all the platforms are in, everything is sectioned and secured where it needs to be – cabinet is hung, hooks have been installed to hold the dolly, hooks have been installed to hang slip leads, a small trash can has been placed in the cab, the GPS’s have been modified with velcro to stick to the roof of the cab (ha, I will have to take a photo so you guys know what the heck I mean by that…)….we’ve been working away, and its coming along nicely. Not a bad ride for the dogs, if I do say so myself!

(From the back doors looking towards the cab – on the left there is a 500 – with plans to add a second 500 as soon as I can find one to match – and two 200’s on the left, with storage for bins of blankets, towels, whatever…On the right there are four 400’s, three 300’s and a 200 [not pictured] – will add a second row of 400’s and a fourth 300 on this side eventually…)

From the cab looking toward the back doors…The 400’s and 300’s are on the left (where most of the dogs ride, and where I can see them while I’m driving…) and the 500’s on the right …

Will post more as it goes along…and as I remember those little details that make life easier on the road 😉

Getting up to date….

Time flies when you are busy beyond belief!!
We’ve been having a great month, going to far too many dog shows…and the babies have been doing us proud this year.

Widget is up to 6 points, and (*knock on wood*) will hopefully single out this weekend. Then we will just be on the hunt for majors. Heck, we are on the hunt for majors anyway!!

Camille has been entered in her first show where she will be eligible for points. I’m quite excited for her debut as her baby puppy career (for whatever that was…) has been exciting thus far! Hopefully we can keep up the momentum and have a blast with the little girl in the mean time 🙂 Shes so stinkin cute and sweet its hard not to just fall head over heels in love with her!

Puzzle is sitting at 10 points (with 3 majors)….she needs 5 singles to finish. I’m HOPEFUL that we can have that done before she turns a year old, but we all know how best laid plans go! I want to finish Puzzle before seriously taking Camille out looking for points…no sense in having the babies competing against each other! There is only one of me, after all!

Maui had an absolute BLAST going out to the MHSDF shows at the beginning of the month and playing show dog again. She loved seeing all her friends again. I was personally hurt that only one person clapped for us in the Veteran Sweeps group. But Maui didnt care, she was out having fun doing what she loves to do the most. And she got to show with Melissa again as well in Juniors….(they won their Open Senior class)

Everyone else has just been hanging out, having fun at home, chasing chickens and what not.

We are off to more shows this weekend and next…hopefully will have more exciting things to report 🙂 (and maybe in a more timely manner as well!! LOL)

Official Win Photo From Cheyenne…

I dont even know if I ever bragged about this one or not – but we entered Camille in her first “official” show, in Cheyenne Wyoming over Labor Day weekend. I only went to the show because they were offering the 4-6 month puppy competition. I figured it would be great experience for the baby….and I couldnt have been more correct.

The icing on the cake was that the judges LOVED her. She won the puppy Sporting group (over a large and NICE entry of puppies!) under Barbara Dempsey Alderman…and went on to win the 4-6 month BEST IN SHOW under Helen Lee James!! We are quite thrilled with the little ones performance her first “official” outing in AKC!
